Physiotherapy After a Motor Vehicle Accident
A motor vehicle accident can cause a wide range of injuries, including whiplash, soft tissue strains, joint injuries, and concussion. Many of these injuries do not produce symptoms immediately and can worsen without treatment. Early physiotherapy assessment is one of the most effective ways to support recovery and reduce the risk of long-term complications.
West 4th Physiotherapy has been treating MVA injuries in Vancouver since 1994. Our team has particular experience with whiplash and post-MVA concussion, and we accept ICBC claims directly, with no referral required to book your first appointment.
How Your ICBC Coverage Works
You do not need a referral.
ICBC provides up to 25 physiotherapy visits within the first 12 weeks following your accident, regardless of who was at fault. You do not need a doctor's referral to begin treatment. You just need an approved claim and your claim number.
We handle the billing.
West 4th Physiotherapy bills ICBC directly. You do not need to pay out of pocket and seek reimbursement. Our admin team manages the billing process and keeps a close eye on your approved treatment dates and visit counts to make sure nothing is missed.
After 25 visits or 12 weeks.
If further treatment is needed beyond 25 visits or the initial 12-week period, your physiotherapist will submit a request to your ICBC adjuster. This typically requires a brief clinical report and, in some cases, a referral from your GP. Our team manages this process and will advise you well in advance of any approaching limits.
At-fault patients are covered.
Your ICBC medical benefits are available regardless of whether you were at fault in the accident. Coverage applies to the driver, passengers, cyclists, and pedestrians involved in an MVA in BC.
MVA Injuries We Treat
Whiplash and Cervical Spine Injuries
Whiplash is the most common MVA injury, affecting the muscles, ligaments, and joints of the neck and upper back. Our team includes practitioners with advanced post-graduate training in whiplash assessment and management, including Marj Belot, who has taught whiplash rehabilitation at UBC's Master of Physical Therapy program for over a decade.
Post-MVA Concussion
Concussion is frequently underdiagnosed following a motor vehicle accident. West 4th Physiotherapy has four practitioners with advanced concussion training, including two SHIFT Concussion Management Level 2 certified physiotherapists. See our Concussion Recovery page for full details.
Soft Tissue and Joint Injuries
MVAs commonly cause strains, sprains, and joint injuries affecting the shoulder, lower back, hip, and knee. We assess and treat the full range of soft tissue injuries resulting from motor vehicle accidents.
Headaches and Dizziness
Post-MVA headaches and dizziness often have a cervicogenic or vestibular component that responds well to physiotherapy. West 4th has three post-graduate vestibular specialists on staff to address dizziness and balance issues following an accident.
